JSAN
The effectiveness of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff's decisions depends on its ability to organize, analyze and communicate information quickly and efficiently. None of this is possible without a modern, integrated office information system.
The Joint Staff Automation for the Nineties (JSAN) contract, which CSC won in 1992, is an eight-year modernization program to provide Joint Staff operations with a state-of-art secure office network. Unlike the legacy system it is replacing, the new system's "open" architecture uses commercial off-the-shelf products, allowing the addition of new technology as it becomes available.
CSC installed 1,500 work stations, infrastructure servers and a new network in six months in 1995 - several months ahead of schedule. CSC designed the network to be scalable, so that projected capabilities can be added with minimal disruption. The work stations are joined by an FDDI backbone that will easily accommodate the extended data communications capabilities projected for the future.
CSC also installed a remote ATM-based network that provides dynamic backup of key systems, providing unsurpassed survivability and redundancy.
